The plant breeding is an art and science of changing the traits of plants in order to produce desired characteristics. It is the purposeful mainpulation of plant species in order to create desired genotypes and phenotypes for specific purpose. The present textbook entitled “Practical: Fundamentals of Plant Breeding” has been designed as per the syllabus recommended by Fifth Deans’ Committee Report, ICAR, New Delhi. It provides the basic techniques and knowledge to understand most of theoretical aspects of plant breeding. The topics mainly covered included the basic knowledge of various designs used in plant breeding experiments with the main emphasis on layout of experiment and its analysis using RBD design, estimation of heritability, prediction of performance of double cross hybrids, identification emasculation and hybridization techniques in some self and cross pollination, crops, handling of segregating generations, male sterility with its maintenance and pollen size with its viability determination.
It is hoped that the book will provide basic study materials on the various aspects of plant breeding and fulfill the hope and requirements of undergraduate students of Agriculture in all Indian Universities.

Prem Prakash Sharma, an Ex Associate Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Rajasthan Collage with 15 years of teaching experience. He has attended 16 national training /conferences. He has published 3 books. He has also published 45 research papers in journals of national and international repute. He has 8 practical manuals at UG level and 2 practical manuals along with 3 teaching manuals at PG level as author/co-author to his credit. He has also published 7 abstracts and 4 popular articles. He has acted as Principal Investigator/Co. Principal investigator in 8 research projects.

Abhay Dashora, working as an Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Rajasthan college of Agriculture, Udaipur (Raj). has 21 years of research experience. He has has tremendous contribution in the field of plant breeding by developing 3 varieties of groundnut, 1 variety of fenugreek and 1 variety of soyabean. he has 3 books and 2 practical manuals as co-author to his credit. He has published 30 research papers in journals of national and international repute. He has attended 25 national seminars/conferences.
